Hand Built Manifolds

Hand Built Manifolds

I wanted to show you some of the cars I have worked on over the years. You can see the collection is wide and varied. We had a lot of fun working on them and even more seeing the results.

The first is the 1927 Sunbeam land speed record car which reached 150.4 mph. This more recent photograph was taken while testing at Silverstone for a re-run of the Land Speed Record. It beat the 1927 time by 0.03mph. This car was later sold at Christie’s for £1 million.

This next picture is of my own personal toy! It is a 6R4 Metro. It is  4 litre V8 mid-engined with rear wheel drive only and very quick. With a top speed of 150mph I got 0-60 in 3 seconds and 0-100 in 7 seconds.

Next comes John Cooper’s first 3 litre Formula One racing car. This beauty was fitted with a road going Alpha Romeo 2.5 litre engine bored and stroked to 3 litres. Driver: Bruce McLaren.

I have some other picures here on a slide show. In it you will see an old Alvis, a racing Porsche, a couple of owner hand-built cars and even the works Golf GTi prepared by Richard Lloyd Racing. The photo was taken at Brands Hatch and the two drivers are Stirling Moss and Barry Sheene.

Some of these exhaust manifolds on the cars in the slide show are stainless steel manifolds while the chromed manifolds are made from mild steel.

Enjoy the slide show here

During the 42 years I ran GDS Exhausts I have calculated that we made approximately 10,000 “one-off” exhaust systems and in the region of 40,000 production exhausts. Since then I continue to make exhausts for Gentry Restorations and Ivan Dutton Ltd. who are both Bugatti restoration specialists based  in the “silicone valley of the motor racing industry”.
