The system on “Spike’s Car” on the left, is in polished stainless steel. We built this car from scratch here in Spain where I live.
The 3 MG cars are “In the Paddock at Silverstone”. They are K3 MGs of 1933. The manifolds and Broolands are in mild steel with a chrome finish. Can you spot my replica?
I have made many jigs over the years and also have original drawings from the 1920-30’s to help in the production of your Classic car exhaust system.
The list is almost endless of the different cars I have made and continue to make manifolds for.
Brooklands silencers and fishtails were not fitted because they were efficient. They were fitted purely for cosmetic reasons. Having said that, they did not take the power away as a baffle design box could have, so flow was pretty good with only some turbulence in the box. Before we get too excited, let’s have a look at Brooklands silencers first.
Certain cars with a cigar shaped body and motorcycle mudguards inevitably had exhausts mounted to the side of the car as opposed to underneath. This is why they were fitted with the Brooklands silencers and fishtails during the period from around 1910 up until the late 1930’s.
While Brooklands silencers can be made in any size, I make them out of 1.5mm steel sheet with inlet tube diameter and outlet to the sizes required. In the last twenty years I have made re-packable silencers which help to soften the “rasp” at certain revs. Normally these Brooklands silencers are then chromed before being fitted to your vehicle.
Alternatively, I manufacture exhausts in stainless steel which only require fine polishing for a lasting finish.
Fishtails
Fishtails were used in conjuction with the Brooklands silencers when fitted to a car but also used on many motorbikes with an appropriate silencer.
Rather than “one size fits all”, off the shelf, they normally come in two sizes; small and large! The inlet can vary in size to suit and of course, they can be made in any size at all.
As with the Brookland silencers, my fishtails are made from 1.5mm sheet steel ready for chroming or from stainless steel. The choice is yours.
